BiographyJoan was born and raised on a farm in southern Ontario. She attended Banting Memorial High School in Alliston. After high school, she attended the University of Toronto where she got her degree in Physical and Health Education. Joan taught Physical Education, Health and English at the high school level in Toronto before moving to Jasper, Alberta where she taught Phys. Ed and Art at Jasper Jr./Sr. High School. Joan has always been interested in art, but family and work often took priority. In Jasper, Joan met Barb Brooks, a local emerging artist who inspired, taught, and encouraged Joan to work with watercolors. Living in the beauty of the Rocky Mountains motivated her to learn how to understand, draw and paint mountains, which she continues to enjoy painting to this day. In 1992 Joan moved to Vernon, British Columbia, and shortly after met Patricia Lawton, who taught watercolor classes. With Patricia’s advice, patience and expertise, Joan learned a great deal about drawing and painting with watercolor. In 2004 she began teaching drawing and watercolor classes herself in her home studio. She continues to teach art classes and do her own watercolors, exhibiting at shows & events when time permits. Joan’s other passion is teaching fitness classes, believing that art and fitness are a perfect fit to compliment one another.
